Text Box: Crown

From Africa, Yorba Culture, Nigeria.

This crown, made in the 20th century, was made for a man in the Yoruba culture of Nigeria.  He would wear this pillbox-style hat as a sign of his high station.  The glass beadwork which decorates this crown shows a melding of African and European culture (shown in the patterns and the cross motif).  This mixture is shown in the profile of the British crown set on a field of native Yoruba interlace patterns.
